The first weekend of the WSL’s 2024/25 season has officially been and gone, but not without giving us some incredible goals, standout saves and brilliant individual performances. It may have felt like a long wait since the end of last season, but the games certainly did not disappoint. Only Arsenal’s clash against Manchester City at the Emirates was left in a draw, and even that game had four incredible goals for fans to enjoy.
We don’t know about you, but it all felt like a bit of a blur – and we can’t wait to do it all again next weekend. Until then, though, we thought we’d revisit some of the action from the weekend just gone. Whether you missed some of the games or just want to relive all the drama, here are some of our favourite moments from the WSL’s opening weekend.
1. Sonia Bompastor doing a last-minute dash to the dressing room before kick-off
sonia bompastor running away from kick off…welcome to the wsl ma’am
Who knows what Sonia Bompastor left in the changing room, but her last-minute dash provided the perfect meme-able moment. We suspect we'll be seeing this clip plenty of times throughout the season.
2. That screamer from Johanna Rytting Kaneryd to get the league underway
You know it's going to be a good season when that's the opening goal. Fantasy managers everywhere who transferred Johanna Rytting Kaneryd out of their team at the last moment were quaking in their boots.
3. Millie Bright defending the goal with her face and acting like nothing happened

Millie Bright is the definition of taking it like a champ.
4. Sabrina D’Angelo almost scoring a header for Aston Villa in the 93rd minute
You couldn't write this stuff, but that's why we love this league so much. Only Hannah Hampton's incredible save could have made this moment even better (which it did).
5. Kiko Sieke casually scoring a hat trick for Brighton on her WSL debut
Talk about making a splash. We suspect Kiko Sieke will be joining the teams of plenty of fantasy managers over the next week.
6. The Manchester United team paying tribute to Ella Toone’s Dad
The Manchester United team showed solidarity for Ella Toone and her family during their 4-0 victory with this powerful goal celebration.
7. Sophie Roman-Haug and Marie Höbinger coming together to score once more
The classic Liverpool pair are already at it again. We can't wait to see what else they get up to this season.
8. Jutta Rantala opening her campaign to claim the title of Leicester City’s top goalscorer for the second season
Leicester City were able to hold Liverpool to a 1-1 draw thanks to Jutta Rantala's goal soon after half time. Last season, she scored six goals – the most goals ever scored by a Leicester City Women player in one WSL season. Will she beat her record this year?
9. Hayley Raso marking her return to the WSL with a goal for Tottenham
A dream return to the #BarclaysWSL for Hayley Raso who gives @spurswomen the early lead 👏
After a 693 day wait, fans of Hayley Raso got to see the Australian international hit the back of a WSL net again in Tottenham's 4-0 win over Crystal Palace.
10. Shae Yañez showing off her shot-stopping abilities with 12 saves
Crystal Palace may not have had a dream start to their WSL campaign, but Shae Yañez certainly made her talents known by denying Tottenham a number of goals.
11. Vivianne Miedema thanking fans for her warm reception at the Emirates (and scoring a goal while she was at it)
Seeing Vivianne Miedema return to the Emirates in a Manchester City shirt was always going to be a memorable moment, but the warm reception she received (even after scoring a goal) from both City and Arsenal fans alike was a heartwarming moment.
